The checklist

Pensions and inheritance tax from April 2027: the checklist.

From 6 April 2027 most unused pension funds and death benefits count as part of your estate for inheritance tax. For years a pension was the one pot that passed on outside it, which is why so many people left theirs untouched and spent everything else first.

That order may now be the wrong one. And if you die after 75, whoever inherits also pays income tax on what they draw, so the same money can be taxed twice.

The checklist is nine things we would do now, one line each with the reason, and a worked example that shows the change on one estate.
